To celebrate Hispanic heritage month, I had my students conduct an interview with someone who spoke a language other than English, and ask them questions about the importance of being bilingual and what opportunities bilingualism has opened up for them.
Here was a sampling of the questions my students wrote:
----------------------------------------------------------------
How did you learn Spanish?
Do you ever need to use this language? If so, how?
Was learning Spanish difficult?
What about Spanish that was the most challenging?
What about Spanish was the least challenging?
If you were to have a child, would you raise him/her to speak Spanish?
What advice would you give to students in high school who are learning Spanish?
Where did you study abroad while studying German? How was the experience?
How has being bilingual benefitted you?
Why did you originally choose to study the German language?
----------------------------------------------------------------
I then had my students summarize their findings in Spanish, and then make a 1:30-2 minute presentation using the Vocaroo website.
By the way, if you ever need to make a digital recording, or need students to make a digital recording, the Vocaroo website is hands down the easiest website to use. It's an amazing website -- probably the best underground secret in Education.
Students are in the process of finishing their projects this week, but I will post all the audio presentation links onto a Padlet, and let students listen to their peers' presentations and take notes -- who was interviewed, what was most surprising, and so on.
What kinds of projects do you assign, fellow educators, to promote bilingualism? I'm interested in your thoughts.
